Fund to promote innovation in agriculture

OBJECTIVES

income generation, climate resilience, natural resource protection, improve gender-sensitivity, test innovative water management technologies.

Aim is to test and develop innovative and gender-sensitive water management technologies for environment-friendly production enhancement in aquaculture for replication.

DESCRIPTION

The increasing demand for fish products is putting pressure on natural resources and is questioning the sustainability of marine and inland fisheries and aquaculture development. Therefore, the measure promotes three innovations in different states of development through:

1) further development of improved water circulation systems (Recirculating Aquaculture Systems, RAS) for sustainable shrimp production from aquacultures.

2) the application of a mangrove shrimp production system that improves water quality, economic development and sustainable mangrove ecosystems (ProMangrove).

3) the testing of shrimp larval production.

APPROACH/FIELD OF INTERVENTION

  • Adaption of the already established RAS, used commercially by large farms, to the needs of medium-sized farms
  • reduction of polluting waste water and sludge;
  • provide medium-sized companies with economically viable access to this technology on the basis of successful trials
  • testing extensive sustainable shrimp production within mangroves
  • test how production can be increased without negative ecological consequences and what a sustainable, gender-inclusive business model could look like

TARGETED BENEFICIARIES

  • traditional shrimp and mud crab farmers
  • smallholder households united in a cooperative/shrimp farmer association
  • women in breeding and production, as members of local cooperatives, in treatment and processing as well as in the marketing of shrimp

HIGHLIGHT ACTIVITIES

  • monitoring environmental indicators through information and communication technology (ICT) solutions
  • Workshops, exchange formats and training courses for farmers on the application of the technologies and the dissemination of experience
  • Development and implementation of an accompanying gender strategy (includes development of gender-sensitive business models)
  • Conception of a communication strategy for the dissemination of knowledge
