Training on Biodiversity Action Plan with Turmeric Farmers in Tamil Nadu
In collaboration with Union for Ethical Bio-trade (UEBT), one-day training on the Biodiversity Action Plan for Turmeric farmers was held in Erode district, Tamil Nadu. The training was part of the āEnhancement of Smallholder Spice Farmerās Capacities in Sustainable Farmingā project, aimed at making production practices economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable. The project operates under the develoPPP.de Programme, implemented by GIZ for the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), with AVT McCormick and McCormick as the lead executing agency. The session’s primary goal was to increase farmers’ awareness of biodiversity risks in the spice supply chain and showcase prevention methods.
Participants learned about good agricultural practices, like intercropping, mixed cropping, trap crops, and cover crops were emphasized to enhance biodiversity in turmeric fields. Moreover, the training highlighted the role of beneficial insects and microbes in reducing pest attacks and pesticide usage. As a follow-up, participants will be working on conserving biodiversity by implementing a Biodiversity Action Plan in their fields under the guidance of the project team.Ā
