The National Spice Conference 2023 in Hyderabad, organised by the World Spice Organization and co-hosted by GIZ, convened industry leaders and stakeholders to address challenges and promote responsible practices in the spice sector. With a focus on “Food Safe Spices ā€“ The Way Forward to a Stable & Sustainable Income,” the event facilitated knowledge exchange and expertise transfer, particularly benefiting Farmers’ Producer Organizations (FPO) representatives and farmers seeking insights into market trends and solutions.

Highlights included Mr. Ramkumar Menon’s opening remarks and an inaugural address by Cherian. Sessions led by Dr Poonam Pandey emphasised increasing farmers’ income through sustainable agricultural practices, showcasing case studies on supply chains, precision farming, and regenerative practices.

Success stories from master trainers illustrated the impact of the ‘Enhancement of Smallholder Spice Farmers Capacities in Sustainable Farming’ (DPPP Spices) project, highlighting positive outcomes in six states across five spices. Two lead farmers from Erode, Tamil Nadu, from the DPPP Spices project, Mrs. Kousalya Devi Viswanathan and Mr. Thangamani underscored the tangible benefits of sustainable farming practices, demonstrating their positive influence on production quality, soil health, and market linkages.
