State level workshop on ‘Challenges and Opportunities of Agroforestry in Uttar Pradesh’ held in Lucknow
The state-level workshop on ‘Challenges and Opportunities of Agroforestry in Uttar Pradesh’ held in Lucknow on 20 October 2023, brought together over 150 participants, including representatives from the Forest Department, policymakers, research institutions, and farmers. Hosted by the Sustainable Management of Forest Ecosystem Services (FES) Project in collaboration with the Government (GoUP) and the Forest Department of Uttar Pradesh (UPFD), the workshop aimed to address pressing issues faced by the state’s agrarian communities.
Key objectives included mutual learning on the current state of agroforestry in Uttar Pradesh, demonstration of location-specific agroforestry systems, and exploration of market mechanisms to enhance farmers’ income.
Takeaways from the workshop emphasised the role of agroforestry in achieving state and national forest policy targets, the development of a comprehensive ‘Agroforestry and Agroforestry Produce-Based Promotion Policy by the Government of Uttar Pradesh’, and the importance of capacity building and stakeholder collaboration in promoting sustainable agroforestry practices. The workshop highlighted the significant contributions of agroforestry in diversifying farmers’ livelihoods, increasing tree cover, and mitigating climate change, underscoring the valuable support provided by the Indo-German development partnership within the state.
