Participation of Leading Farmers’ Group in BIOFACH INDIA 2022 from Three Project States from 1st to 3rd September 2022

Discussion of farmers on value addition for organic spices [GIZ/Poonam Pandey]

BIOFACH INDIA is a leading Trade Fair and Exhibition for the Organic Industry in India, organised by Nürnberg Messe, India. The event was held under the aegis of Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India and aimed to connect all the key players from the Organic and Natural Industry on a single platform. DPPP Spices project facilitated the participation of leading farmers from Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan and Kerala in BIOFACH India 2022. The group consisted of ten leading farmers including four women farmers. The event was an eye opener for the farmers as a lot of information and knowledge exchange happened over the course of three days with different stakeholders. The group interacted with various key players, NGOs, and businesses on different aspects of organic production and marketing practices.

As per the available statistics, India is ranked 8th in terms of world’s organic agricultural land area and 1st in terms of total number of producers as per 2020 data (Source: FIBL & IFOAM Yearbook, 2020). In addition to the growing domestic market, India is the 2nd largest exporter of organic products in Asia after China. The major Indian organic products in demand include oilseeds, sugarcane, cereals & millets, cotton, pulses, medicinal plants, tea, fruits, spices, dry fruits, vegetables, and coffee.

AREA
As on 31st March 2020, the total area under organic certification process (registered under National Programme for Organic Production) was 3.67 million Hectares (2019-20). This includes 2.299 million hectares of cultivable area and another 1.37 million hectares for wild harvest collection. Among all states, Madhya Pradesh has covered the largest area under organic certification followed by Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Odisha, Sikkim and Uttar Pradesh.

PRODUCTION
India produced around 2.75 million MT (2019-20) of certified organic products which includes all varieties of food products namely Oilseeds, Sugar cane, Cereals & Millets, Cotton, Pulses, Aromatic & Medicinal Plants, Tea, Coffee, Fruits, Spices, Dry Fruits, Vegetables, Processed Foods, etc. However, the production is not limited to the edible sector and organic cotton fibre, functional food products, etc are also produced. Among different states Madhya Pradesh is the largest producer followed by Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.

EXPORTS
The total volume of export during 2019-20 was 6.389 lakh MT. And the organic food export realization was around INR 4,686 crore (689 million USD). Organic products are exported to USA, European Union, Canada, Switzerland, Australia, Japan, Israel, UAE, New Zealand, Vietnam, etc. In terms of export value realization, processed foods including soya meal (45.87%) lead among other products followed by Oilseeds (13.25%), plantation crop products such as Tea and Coffee (9.61%), Cereals and Millets (8.19%), Spices and Condiments (5.20%), Dry Fruits (4.98%, Sugar (3.91), Medicinal Plants (3.84%) and others.
