Optimise Viet Nam’s Sustainable Forest Management with Lessons Learnt from European Countries

26 May 2023

In May 2023, a study tour on the experience of SFM in European countries was organised by the project “Upscaling of sustainable forest management (SFM) and Certification in Viet Nam”. Eighteen representatives of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, provincial government agencies along with 6 partner forest owners in Quang Tri, Binh Dinh and Phu Yen provinces visited and worked with forest research, training institutes, and a variety of sub-national forest owners in Germany and Switzerland. Aiming to optimise SFM, Vietnamese participants were especially interested in learning more about business models, forest certification systems and how to finance SFM in the two countries.

“In these countries, forests have multi-functions incl. social, economic, environmental & conservation of equal priority. Incentive schemes are provided for forests management and development in that way. Forest owners are also funded for testing new species that are resilient and adaptable to climate changes. We hope this model could be applicable to Viet Nam,” Mr. Do Quang Tung, Acting Director of the Management Board of Forestry Projects, shared.
