Newest Beach Forest Manual (2019) from the Philippines

16 June 2020

The GIZ “Sustainable Coastal Protection through Biodiversity Conservation in Coastal Ecosystems affected by Typhoons in the Philippines” (ProCoast) Project in the Philippines, together with the Zoological Society of London- Philippines (ZSL), is currently developing field manuals and protocols for mangrove and beach forest conservation, rehabilitation and management. The ZSL has launched the MANUAL ON NURSERY AND OUTPLANTING OF BEACH FOREST TREES as their counterpart for the project.

Mangroves and beach forests serve as coastal greenbelts which help protect communities from typhoons, storm surges, and tsunamis. Beach forests are necessary for carbon sequestration, reduction of greenhouse gases, and biodiversity conservation. The coastal forests cover in the Philippines has been reduced drastically over the years through unregulated human activities.

The beach forest manual, as part of the ProCoast capacity development training program, aims to:
1) document nursery and outplanting protocols for beach forest species based on ZSL germination experiments, tree farm planting trials and the collective experience of academic experts, nursery operators, and native tree growers;
2) disseminate field protocols to government agencies, non-government organizations, academe, and corporations in order to improve the diversity and supply of native tree seedlings; and
3) increase awareness of the general public about beach forest species and improve conservation initiatives through their active propagation and rehabilitation.

The Beach Forest Manual is funded by Turing Foundation, Forest Foundation of the Philippines and ZSL. The GIZ ProCoast project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety under the International Climate Change Initiative (BMU-IKI). Complementary copies were distributed to partner government agencies, NGOs, local government units, academe and peopleā€™s organizations. For personal copies, please contact Cel Tungol, Administrator of the Philippine Native Tree Enthusiasts, through FB Messenger.
