Integration of Forest Ecosystem Services in Forest Management: Focus on Water Availability

The effective management of forested areas is crucial for improving access to water resources, including springs. The National Working Plan Code 2014 also emphasizes on special provisions to sustain water resources for the dependent communities. Following this, the ā€œSustainable Management of Forest Ecosystem Servicesā€ (FES) project in collaboration with the Uttarakhand Forest Department (UKFD), is organising a brainstorming workshop. The participants will constitute senior level officials from the forest departments of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, Government of Sikkim and a non-for-profit organisation called the Advanced Center for Water Resources Development and Management (ACWADAM).

Objectives of the Workshop

  • To strengthen the understanding of rejuvenation of water resources in the Indian Himalayan Region through forest management
  • To explore potential approaches and existing institutional mechanisms for water-based forest management at landscape level including working plans by experience sharing

Expected Outcome

  • Identification of best practices for management of water resources which can be integrated in forest plans. Recommendations for strengthening of existing institutional mechanisms for management of waterbodies in forested landscapes.
