The Directorate General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation (DG-KSDAE) of the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry, in collaboration with GIZ through the Climate and Biodiversity Hub Indonesia (CLARITY), organized an intensive training on Coral Reef Species Identification, Inventory, and Analysis. The training was conducted in two stages: online on September 26–27, 2023, and on-site in Bali from October 2–7, 2023, with the aim of enhancing the management of marine ecosystem conservation.

The online training session held on September 26–27, 2023, was attended by approximately 400 staff from DG-KSDAE, including those from national parks and regional offices. This session provided an overview of the coral reef ecosystem and its conservation policy. Experts covered topics such as coral reef conservation policy, CITES wildlife species governance, coral reef ecosystem biology-ecology, biodiversity and sustainable use, coral reef species identification, standardized data collection, and data analysis for assessing reef health.

Meanwhile, the hands-on training program conducted in Bali from October 2 to 7, 2023, was attended by 30 selected participants from the Directorate of Wildlife Species and Genetic Biodiversity Conservation, eight national parks, and seven regional offices. This training provided participants with both theory and on-site practice. The theoretical part covered the identification, inventory, and analysis of coral reef species, as well as diving techniques and underwater photography. Practical training took place in both a pool and in the Amed Sea, the Northeast of Bali. On the final day of the training, participants visited PT. Aquatic Marine in Bali to practice coral species identification. Before the training concluded, participants took a written test to obtain an A1 diving certificate.

The participants in the training expressed their gratitude for the valuable knowledge and skills they acquired, which will enable them to improve monitoring and, in turn, combat illegal trade and unsustainable exploitation of marine life, particularly coral reefs. DG-KSDAE is dedicated to further enhancing personnel capabilities and enhancing marine conservation management.
