CAP on and onward! The ASEAN-German Climate Action Programme (CAP) Has Commenced

Commencing the project, ASEAN Member States and Germany held an inception workshop and the first Project Steering Committee meeting of ASEAN – German Climate Action Programme (CAP). This event was organised by Deutsche Gesellschaft fĆ¼r Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in coordination with ASEAN Secretariat. This project marks the first cooperation between Germany and ASEAN in the sphere of climate policy

During the opening of the event Dr. Hak Mao, Director, Department of Climate Change, General Directorate of Policy and Strategy, the Ministry of Environment, Cambodia, conveyed the importance of collaboration in tackling climate issue, ā€œClimate change is a reality, and we need to take urgent actionsā€.

Representing the project, GIZ Principal Advisor Roland Treitler highlighted the project objectives and components. He looked forward to receiving inputs and suggestions for the project directions from the ASEAN Member States, ā€œThis is where we will talk about the outline of the project, your contribution and guidance to which direction we should moveā€.

The inception workshop of CAP Project engaged participants in caravan sessions facilitated by GIZ Team, discussing three topics pertinent to the project which included Capacity Development, Climate Mainstreaming, and Knowledge Management and Communications Approach. The participants shared their thoughts and advice for further collaboration on the topics.

The first Project Steering Committee (PSC) Meeting was led by the AWGCC Chair represented by Mr. Ahmad Farid Mohammed, Deputy Undersecretary, Climate Change Division, Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change (NRECC), Malaysia. Members of the steering committee of CAP had the chance to formally discuss and affirmed the structure and operationalisation of the project.

Ā In this session also, the project heard feedbacks and directions given by the ASEAN Member States to ensure smooth planning and implementation of the project. Key outcomes from this meeting include CAP project support to ASEAN in the preparation towards UNFCCC COP 28 to raise active participation and visibility of ASEAN through measures including ASEAN side events, negotiation trainings and capacity buildings.
