Strengthening national implementation of global biodiversity targets (GBF Implementation) – NBSAP-Partnerschaft

OBJECTIVES

Selected partner countries are successfully implementing their national biodiversity targets, which are aligned with the GBF.

DESCRIPTION

Conserving biodiversity is ā€“ like taking action against climate change ā€“ one of the biggest challenges of our times. To this end, the parties to the international Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) adopted the new Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) in 2022. This heralds a global turning point in conserving biodiversity and thus the natural resources on which human life depends. Governments and societies as a whole are to implement measures to bring about change, with the participation of Indigenous Peoples and local communities.

To implement their national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs), developing countries and emerging economies are calling not only for financial resources, but also for support in building and developing their capacities in order to enhance the institutional framework.

APPROACH/FIELD OF INTERVENTION

The project operates in three fields of activity, and specifically promotes the participation of Indigenous Peoples and local communities. The focus is on supporting whole-of-government and whole-of-society processes in the cooperation countries.

  1. The project offers needs-based advice on national policy processes to update the NBSAPs in selected high-ambition cooperation countries and to support implementation measures.
  2. It also promotes the participation of Indigenous Peoples and local communities in aligning and implementing national biodiversity targets.
  3. In addition, it encourages countries to share knowledge and experience. The project is thus also helping to advance the aims of the global NBSAP Accelerator Partnership. This was launched by Colombia and other recipient and donor countries, and is intended to support the rapid implementation of the NBSAPs.
