Strengthening climate adaptation and climate resilience, Pakistan (SAR)

OBJECTIVES

In Pakistan, the conditions for the country to adapt to climate change and deal with climate risks have improved. Women and other vulnerable groups are better protected.

DESCRIPTION

Pakistan is one of the countries most affected by climate change. Floods, droughts, erratic rainfall, melting glaciers, heat waves and extreme weather events have led to enormous economic losses and pose major challenges for the people and the Government. As climate change progresses, these events will occur more frequently and more intensively.

APPROACH/FIELD OF INTERVENTION

The project supports the Pakistani Government in adapting to climate change. One focus is on the protection of particularly vulnerable groups.

The project includes the following measures:

  • The Government is supported in gaining better access to international finance to fund climate adaptation and climate risk management measures. The Government and municipalities in the affected provinces are advised on national and international options for financing climate adaptation.
  • In the provinces, the project contributes to the implementation and further development of adaptation measures through international climate funds.
  • The project also promotes efforts to assess risks more effectively in the provinces. This enables local authorities to better plan which measures and funds they will need in the future for climate adaptation and dealing with loss and damage.
