Multistakeholder Collaboration for a ‘Zero Dumping – Zero Burning’ Green Fair at Renuka Wetland
A ‘Zero Dumping – Zero Burning’ Green Fair at Renuka Wetland saw a multistakeholder collaboration aimed at addressing waste management challenges. Attended by over 100,000 daily visitors and 700+ commercial establishments, this annual fair posed significant environmental concerns. Organised as part of the Save Wetlands Campaign by the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, the Green Renuka Fair in November 2023 fostered cooperation among local communities, businesses, religious institutions, and government agencies.
Key objectives included promoting anti-littering campaigns, enforcing a single-use plastic ban, and ensuring effective waste segregation. Through pre-fair awareness campaigns and Green Fair Guidelines, over 500 individuals were sensitised, contributing to a commitment to environmental stewardship during the event. Notable outcomes included successful mass cleanup drives and diversion of 4,500 kilograms of waste from the wetland ecosystem to a material recovery facility.
Lessons learned from this initiative are poised to guide similar green events around wetlands nationwide, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts in waste management and environmental conservation.
