Test run of the Wood ID app using timber samples from a specifically created timber data base.

Viet Nam is the world’s fifth largest timber exporter and timber imports are also substantial. Among the timber species traded, some are imported from high-risk nations, others might be restricted for trade, but are easily confused with other species. However, Vietnamese verification agencies and timber importers have yet been able to effectively verify the legality of imported timber. There is a need to enhance their knowledge and skills in timber identification. To ease this challenge, GIZ is developing a Wood ID app, which, when used with a smartphone and an attached magnifying glass, can identify up to 200 tree species, helping to monitor timber legality.
