The BMUV-IKI Wetlands Management for Biodiversity and Climate Protectionproject, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), has launched a Media Engagement Programme to equip future media personnel with the knowledge and skills necessary for wetland conservation. This initiative features a series of training workshops organised in Indian states for media studies and journalism students, with the Centre for Media Studies (CMS) as the technical implementation partner.

The programme aims to empower media students to tell compelling wetland stories and foster environmental journalism. The first workshop was held at Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism in Bhopal, engaging nearly 70 budding journalists and faculty members. In the second workshop co-hosted with the Media Education Research Centre (MERC) at the University of Kashmir saw over 60 media students, scholars, and faculty members participated. These workshops included field visits to Ramsar sites and interactive sessions to enhance participants’ understanding of wetland conservation and discussed tenets of environmental journalism.

These trainings for media students and planned workshops for media personnel aim to support an informed and proactive media community that engages efficiently in capturing the stories of wetlands and bringing them to the citizens. The whole-of-society approach is essential to achieve our climate and biodiversity goals and supports people in being part of the plan.
