The near real-time Provincial Deforestation Monitoring System (PDMS) was developed as remote-sensing monitoring tool combined with field verification to monitor land use change and forest area. PDMS was developed jointly by the Department of Forest Inspection (DOFI) and Department of Forestry (DOF) with support by Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA). After Participatory Land Use Planning (PLUP 2.0) and Village Forest Management Planning (VFMP) are implemented in the targeted villages, PDMS will be used as a connected tool to assess the forest cover change. The land use change is regularly monitored in 240 target villages in three northern provinces of Huaphan, Luang Prabang, Sayaboury. When PDMS detects deforestation cases, PDMS teams at provincial and district levels will go to the field for further verification. Between 8 and 17 July 2024, those detected deforestation points will be visited by the respective teams.
