Since biodiversity conservation and protection are cross-sectoral and impacted at various levels – government-led policies to ground implemented projects/schemes, flow of information horizontally as well as vertically is imperative for ensuring an enabling environment for all. In the Northeastern region of India, there is a felt need to bring the freshwater biodiversity fraternity into a knowledge exchange platform for discussion and deliberation on various aspects of sustainable management of aquatic resources. With this aim, a Knowledge Exchange Series on Aquatic Resources Management has been initiated by the Indo-German Project ‘Protection and Sustainable Management of Aquatic Resources in the North-Eastern Himalayan Region of India’ (NERAQ). The series is conducted monthly on www.atingi.org. Eminent speakers are being invited for the sessions on their subjects of expertise. Participants, hailing from various backgrounds learn and exchange with experienced resource persons on different topics around the freshwater resources sector, emerging technologies, methods, issues, challenges, and more. These sessions also touch upon intersections such as traditional knowledge, art, culture, etc., and their possible enhancement through the integration the science around the subject.

The topics of the sessions held so far were themed:

  • Introduction in fish stock assessment and management challenges’
  • Sustainable livelihoods vis-à-vis aquatic resource management’
  • In-situ conservation: Research, policy and field learnings’ respectively
  • Aquatic Health Barometer: How bioindicators can reveal the environmental status’
  • Springshed Management for Sustainable Aquatic Resources’
  • What Aquatic Ecosystems mean for Indigenous People and Local Communities’

The knowledge exchange series has been successful in bringing together international, national, and local stakeholders. Further, various institutions have proposed new sessions for discussion. The most encouraging outcome of the knowledge exchange series are the potential/early signs of collaboration/cooperation among participants/organisations.
