Joint Sector Network Regional Conference update
The Joint Sector Network Regional Conference between the SNRD Asia and the Pacific and TUEWAS is held biannually to provide a face-to-face platform for members from all over Asia and the Pacific to learn from one another, build professional capacity, promote regional and technical knowhow, as well as to discuss the possibility of a cross Working Group and cross Sectoral collaboration. This year we will exchange our technical topics between SNRD Asia and the Pacific & TUEWAS with focus on the scaling up of the sustainable implementation. Our main target group are those members that are actively contributing to our work or plan to do so in the future.

Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, the SNRD Asia and the Pacific and SN TUEWAS, in consultation with the Management Committee, has decided to postpone the planned conference from 12-15 May 2020 to 6-9 October 2020 – currently we are discussing in which format the conference will be held. To register for the conference, please visit our IDA Community post. For further information, please send an e-mail to snrd-asia@giz.de.

The new SNRD Asia and the Pacific Innovation and Learning Fund 2020
Image
To encourage the development of innovations and learnings, SNRD Asia and the Pacific Steering Group considers the Innovation and Learning Fund an effective mode to provide financial support and a stimulus for innovative and learning activities. Therefore, an amount of 45,000 € is made available for such purpose. Proposals may range from 5,000 – 15,000 €, increased from the past allowance of 5,000 € per working group only, and may be co-funded by individual or multiple projects. The SNRD Asia and the Pacific members participated in the approval process by giving comments/suggestions to the proposals which were shared on SNRD Asia and the Pacific IDA Community. For more information on the Innovation and learning fund please click here.

News from “Sustainable Agricultural Supply Chains and Standards” programme
We demand deforestation-free supply chains as well as the compliance with human rights, especially fair payments and incomes as well as the reduction of child labour, in conjunction with the production of these crops: palm oil, rubber, coffee, cocoa, banana, soy, orange juice and cotton. In order to reach these targets, we work on stakeholder platforms in Germany, the EU and the target countries and develop pilot projects to be implemented in the global south.

An interview with Koko Warner from UNFCCC in the podcast “Vom Feld ins Regal” (“From field to shelf”) about future perspectives of a sustainable agricultural supply chains.
Have you ever wondered what role digitization plays in global supply chains? What does your cup of coffee have to do with Blockchain? Or are you dealing with gender inequality in the cocoa harvest? Do you know what impact populism has on sustainable development? To find answers to these questions, you can listen to the Podcast here. Read more

Reaching zero deforestation in supply chains – why we need a jurisdictional approach (Forestry)
Image
Figure 1 : Halimah Deny Sofian from Mentebah is one of the rubber farmers participating in the pilot project in Kapuas.

Many global companies have committed to eliminate deforestation from their supply chains by 2020. But as increasing global deforestation rates indicate, most of them are not on track to meet that goal. One reason could be that approaches are too narrowly defined. Taking the example of Indonesia, our authors demonstrate how an overarching approach could help implement these corporate zero-deforestation commitments and supply chain initiatives together with all involved stakeholders in a manner beneficial to forests, the overall environment and human beings – and at scale. The Sino-German Environmental Partnership (SGEP) will expand its ongoing work to further emphasise biodiversity conservation. The International Climate Initiative (IKI) funded this strategic top-up against the background of China hosting the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The newly added measures will support the dialogue between China and Germany for a more sustainable and inclusive COP as well as an ambitious global post-2020 framework, which is to be adopted at COP 15. Sub-national pilots for ecosystem accounting and biodiversity modelling will feed back into policy design and implementation to ultimately enhance China’s environmental governance system.

Local oil palm small-scale farmers in Krabi province stand to significantly benefit from a memorandum of understanding (MoU) they have signed with the palm oil mills in February this year.

Kanokwan Saswattecha, project manager of the Sustainable and Climate-friendly Palm Oil Production and Procurement (SCPOPP) in Thailand said the collaboration will create a trust-worthy partnership to mainstream sustainable palm oil production and promote responsible sourcing practices among local oil palm producers across the supply chain. Thailand is the third largest palm oil producing countries in the world. However, only two per cent of palm oil production in the country is ‘sustainably produced’. Read more

We would like to introduce you to an on-going project, the "Climate Risk Financing in Cooperation with ASEAN", which has just started in 2020. However, due to the current situation, the planned activities are delayed since January. This on-going project builds on the experience and dialogue we had in the previous ASEAN project (completed in 2019) to continue the crop insurance promotion in ASEAN as one of the finance risk management tools.

Understanding the Community Wellbeing within Kayan Sembakung Delta, North Kalimantan
Image
Delta Kayan Sembakung ecosystem (North Kalimantan, Indonesia) is currently facing the degradation mostly due to anthropogenic activities. In fact, land use change has become major threat to the delta ecosystem, where peat and mangrove transformed into shrimp pond. These land conversion practices will affect the community as natural resources user. It may contribute to the local community vulnerability from the social and economic aspects and lead to the increased poverty. Following the issue, socio-economic baseline study in Delta Kayan Sembakung had taken place on November – December 2020 to identify the attributes affecting community well-being based on the current state of the delta.
