Stakeholder workshop on assessment of climate adaptation and disaster resilience co-benefits of wetland management. © GIZ India

The positive impacts of wetland management practices, particularly regarding climate co-benefits, remain insufficiently understood. To bridge this gap, a methodology is being developed to assess the climate adaptation and disaster risk reduction (DRR) co-benefits of wetland management as part of the “Indo-German Support Project for Climate Action in India.” On August 6, a stakeholder workshop was convened in New Delhi, chaired by the Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. The event brought together various knowledge partners, wetland managers, state wetland authorities, and experts from research institutes. Feedback from the workshop indicated that while the assessment tool is comprehensive and user-friendly, quantifying adaptation benefits will depend on data availability. Discussions also centered on how the assessment results could support efforts to secure national and international climate finance. As India advances its Nationally Determined Contributions, this methodology could significantly enhance sustainable wetland management as an essential element of climate action and disaster resilience strategies.
