In the Southeast Asia region, the NbS approach aligns with the regional framework for post-COVID-19 recovery and green economies, as described in theĀ ASEAN Comprehensive Recovery Framework (ACRF). Promoting NbS and sustainable development will contribute to a more resilient region amidst global challenges such as climate change, food security, land and coastal degradation, and many others.

In 2021, the Food, Agriculture and Forestry Division (FAFD) of the ASEAN Secretariat, with facilitated support from the Climate-Smart Land Use (CSLU) in ASEAN project, conducted a study carried on by Unique Land Use GmbH.Ā The study of NbS in ASEAN across the forest, bare land and coastal ecosystem aimedĀ to assess and promote the role of NbS in the regional ASEAN context that can contribute to the development of NbS-related capacity-building programmes in the region.

As a follow-up, the workshop to share and discuss the main findings from the study was organized virtually on 25 April 2022 and attended by 47 participants. The ASEAN Member States (AMS) representatives, who have received and provided feedback on the draft study, continued to discuss ideas further during the workshop. In addition, the representatives shared practices of policy frameworks and implementation at the national level and identified options forward on how to upscale NbS in the region.

The study highlighted the regional relevance of the topic. It proposed several future regional focus areas, namely, to promote (1) sustainable and circular agriculture, (2) the reduction of the use of agrochemicals in agriculture practices, (3) NbS in the agriculture and forestry sector and (4) decarbonization. Furthermore, results from the event will feed into further dialogues, knowledge products, and policy documents supporting ASEAN actions in the Food, Agriculture and Forestry (FAF) sector and beyond.

The workshop was co-organized by the ASEAN Secretariat and the GIZ ā€œPromotion of Sustainable Agricultural Value Chains in ASEAN (ASEAN AgriTrade) project commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
