PANORAMA – Solutions for a healthy planet

21 December 2016

What if we could identify the best local and regional solutions, and promote them for learning at a global level?

PANORAMA is a partnership initiative to document, promote and exchange examples of inspiring, replicable solutions across a range of conservation and development topics, enabling cross-sectoral learning and inspiration. Different formats are provided through the PANORAMA partnership, including solution exchange forums and workshops, webinars, videos and now an online platform. This platform was launched at the World Conservation Congress in Hawai’i this September and allows practitioners to share their stories, get recognized for successful work, and learn how others have tackled problems. It is an exciting, user-friendly tool that showcases a variety of solutions for conservation and sustainable resource management.

Currently, the PANORAMA platform houses thematic portals on marine and coastal solutions, hosted by Blue Solutions (GIZ, GRID-Arendal, IUCN, UNEP) and on protected area solutions, hosted by the IUCN Global Protected Areas Programme, and is envisioned to be continuously expanded with new partners and solutions from further topics. A brand-new portal featuring ecosystem-based adaptation solutions, hosted by GIZ’s global project “Mainstreaming EbA” has just been launched at the 13th Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity during an event including representatives from GIZ, IUCN, National Protected Area Commission of Mexico (CONANP) and the BMUB:

More than an online platform: The “solution-ing approach”

The PANORAMA partnership offers more than an online platform. The approach to document examples of what works as solutions, broken down into their essential successful elements called building blocks, was pioneered by the Blue Solutions Initiative. Case studies are documented as solutions using a standard format that identifies replicable key success factors, while also describing the context in which the solutions were implemented. Solutions are being shared on the online platform but also through publications, and are integrated into capacity development activities and workshops. This learning and innovation methodology is applicable across topics, sectors, and audiences. We have termed this approach of documenting, sharing and supporting the upscaling of successful interventions “the solution-ing approach”.

PANORAMA – A growing partnership

The three existing portals on the online platform contain more than 280 solutions applied by NGOs, government institutions, academia, international organizations, foundations and the private sector. Solution providers contributing their solutions are the basis of PANORAMA and new and exciting solutions are added continuously!

Thematic hosts such as the Blue Solutions Initiative are responsible for solutions related to a specific topic, they engage with their community and are experts related to questions on their application and adaption in other contexts or the integration into capacity development formats.

The PANORAMA partnership is managed by GIZ and IUCN, realizing the potential of this positive approach across projects and sectors. Particularly, the German Environment Ministry (BMUB) through its International Climate Initiative as well as the GEF are supporting PANORAMA financially.

Explore solutions and learn more!

If you seek inspiration, concrete lessons your peers learned, helpful contacts and resources, or if you have a successful solution yourself that you think others should know about, please join the community and search or contribute a solution on the platform PANORAMA – solutions for a healthy planet. Feedback is always welcome as the initiative and its platform is constantly evolving. If you are interested in further information on the partnership and/or the PANORAMA platform, please contact Janina Korting & Mathias Bertram for GIZ and Marie Fischborn for IUCN.
