Public and private partners join forces for a social and environmentally friendly supply chain |
|
Country: Viet Nam
Timeframe: October 2021 – September 2024
Commissioning Agency: BMZ
Project volume: 4 Mio €
Coconut oil is an all-rounder. It is used for food and cosmetics, but also in technology and industry. Internationally, the Philippines is one of the most important coconut-growing countries, but local production conditions are often inefficient and environmentally harmful.
GIZ/develoPPP therefore joined forces with seven multinational food and cosmetics companies to improve the production conditions of coconut oil along the supply chains in two regions in the Philippines.
Barry Callebaut, Cargill, FrieslandCampina, Jacobs Douwe Egberts, Nestlé, Procter & Gamble, , Unilever and GIZ are pooling their resources and expertise as part of the develoPPP programme, The Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) is partnering up as the government agency to ensure respective support on political level.
The focus of the four-year project is primarily on the smallholder families who grow and process the coconuts. The companies include suppliers of their own value chain but go well beyond that and consider the entire cultivation region. Among other support, smallholders receive training on resource-conserving agricultural practices and, in coordination with local actors such as governments, civil society or NGOs, the conditions in the region are examined using the so-called LandScale method. This considers, for example, how stressed certain areas are as per indicators regarding human well-being, biodiversity or land rights. Furthermore, it will be evaluated how well developed the local infrastructure is and whether there is potential for expanding trade relations with focus on traceability and sustainable sourcing. Depending on what the analysis reveals, joint solutions are developed and established, which, wherever possible, are to be anchored in public and private entities.

Introducing our new Hills to Ocean Working Speaker: Rhodora May Sumaray |
|
Being Filipina, I am more known to GIZ colleagues using my nickname, Sam. As a graduate of public administration, I’ve always been of the belief that public service is the highest calling that a person can take on. While this has changed throughout the years, I still believe that working for the good of our country and for sustainable development, no matter how challenging it is at times, is still something worth pursuing. Starting my career working in various Philippine

government institutions, I discovered that I like crafting public policy and seeing how a good policy impacts the live of the people for the better. And this is how I found myself working for GIZ, traversing various topics from trade and industry to what I am now working on, biodiversity conservation and climate change adaptation, with a focus on policy analysis and policy making. Hit me up if you want to know more of the Philippines, of the work that I do, or of how I can help you. But don’t look for Sam in our corporate address book, instead look for Rhodora May or email me directly at rhodora.raras@giz.de.

New Projects in SNRD Asia and the Pacific! |
New projects aim to strengthen Viet Nam’s forestry sector |
|
Country: Viet Nam
Timeframe: October 2021 – September 2024
Commissioning Agency: BMZ
Project volume: 4 Mio €
In October 2021, two new forestry projects were launched. The “Upscaling of Sustainable Forest Certification” project will support Viet Nam in its transition to sustainable,
|
|
climate-friendly forest management. The “Support for the implementation of the FLEGT VPA” project aims to strengthen Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) by facilitating the implementation of Voluntary Partnership Agreements (VPAs) between the EU and Viet Nam. The two sister projects will contribute to achieving Vietnam's commitments on greenhouse gas emissions reduction and trade in legal timber.
The two sister projects will contribute to achieving Vietnam's greenhouse gas emissions reduction commitments under the Paris Agreement and promote green economic growth through sourcing and trade in legal timber. Viet Nam is one of the world’s largest exporters of timber products and the government has committed to maintaining its current forest cover, which stands at 42% of the country’s total land area. Both projects are commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and will be implemented jointly by GIZ and the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).

Build Forward Better after COVID-19: New Publication on Fiscal Policies for a Green Recovery |
|
Finance ministries and fiscal policies play a crucial role in shaping the green recovery. Substantial fiscal resources have been mobilised to tackle socio-economic impacts of the pandemic so far. However, recovery packages have tended to perpetuate existing trends in spending and do not close the investment gap to address the climate and biodiversity crises.
That is why we are excited to share a new report: Green Recovery for Practitioners – Fiscal Policies for a Sustainable, Inclusive and Resilient Transformation.

Storytelling as a concept offers a framework that allows transferring information, and at the same time, sparks intimacy and empathy. The strength of storytelling which combines narrative elements with different media (text, photos, graphics, map, etc) makes the stories easy to understand also conveys authenticity and credibility.
Therefore, the Coffee+ Project Indonesia has developed five stories from smallholder coffee farmers in Tanggamus, Lampung who joined the project activities and have excelled impacts to be shared and serve as an example.
How these coffee farmers have improved their farming to be more efficient and sustainable, through Agripreneur Development Program that fosters their efficient business and agricultural management skills; and fosters profitable
|
and sustainable integrated agriculture to improve the economy and livelihoods of smallholder coffee farmers and have a regenerative impact on the environment. Growing and changing the mindset of smallholder coffee farmers to cultivate their lands and farm yields is like managing a business because Farming is Business.
These farmers stories both on videos and the publication also communicate the project’s approaches and results which illustrate how the project's contribution to the improvements in people’s living conditions.

Regenerative Coconut Agriculture – Beyond Organic Video |
|
Regenerative organic agriculture has been gaining much attention recently. It is a way of farming, which restores soil health, reverses its impact on climate change, and increases the resiliency of farmers. The "Regenerative Coconuts Agriculture Project" (ReCAP) is a project that was launched by the Danone Ecosystem Fund, Harmless Harvest and
|
the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in June 2020 to support coconut farmers in Thailand to farm regeneratively: From monocrop farms to growing cover crops and intercrops, rearing bees and fish, and making compost from their own farm waste. Not only are these practices environmentally friendly, they also help farmers to save costs and diversify their income sources. To learn more about this journey and listen to what coconut farmers have to say about this way of farming, check out this video!

As a response to COVID-19 and the lockdown, green recovery measures are being implemented at the Point Calimere Ramsar site in India. These measures offer employment opportunities to communities around the site in the short-term while building long-term resilience through management of healthy wetland ecosystems. The measures are focused on the implementation of livelihood-oriented training, conservation, and restoration activities. |
Communities living around the Ramsar site are dependent on Muthupet mangroves for canal and lagoon fishing. In the western part of Muthupet mangroves, a traditional method of fishing locally called vaaikkal meenpidippu (canal fishing) is practiced, which integrates fishery development with mangrove regeneration. These fishing canals exhibit the ingenuity of the local communities based on the symbiotic relationship between mangroves and their fishing-dependent livelihood.

A new data-driven tool helps identify ‘Adaptation Actions’ in Thailand’s water sector |
|
Projected future scenarios of intensifying impacts of climate change entail a great urgency for intensified adaptation efforts to help humans and nature cope with the adverse climate impacts. As the water sector is one of the key areas in climate adaptation, the Thai-German Climate Programme-Water (TGCP-Water) has been supporting Thailand’s Office of National Water Resources (ONWR) and water-related |
agencies on developing the ‘Adaptation Project Checklist’ which helps identify projects that qualify as adaptation in the water sector. This will contribute to national and international reporting of climate adaptation by the water sector in line with Thailand’s National Adaptation Plan and the recently finalized agreements under the Enhanced Transparency Framework of the Paris Agreement. Leadership for Responsive Climate Actions in Agriculture, Forestry and Food systems: Insights from the ASEAN Climate Leadership Programme |
|
This brief discusses the role of systemic leadership in addressing climate change-related land use challenges in Southeast Asia. It reflects on the role of leadership in promoting transformational change towards a low-carbon, resilient and food secure economy and society, both globally and regionally. It builds upon insights from the ASEAN Climate Leadership Programme (ACLP) as a contribution to the work of the ASEAN Climate Resilience Network (ASEAN-CRN). It outlines the ACLP’s underlying theory, discusses experiences from the programme and provides inspiration as to how systemic leadership for climate-smart land use can be further promoted in the context of ASEAN.
