Digitalisation and forestry may seem an unlikely match, but there is significant potential in integrating digital tools to enhance forest management. On 30 July 2024, the beta version of the Ecological Forest Records Entry System (eFOREST) Web Portal was launched by Mr. Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh.  The Indo-German Technical Cooperation Project “Sustainable Management of Forest Ecosystem Services,” being implemented by GIZ India, in cooperation with the Himachal Pradesh Forest Department (HPFD) and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) has developed the eFOREST Web Portal.

This portal aims to improve forest management through precise data collection and real-time monitoring; benefiting policymakers, forest managers, and conservationists. Key features include capturing detailed forest compartment data, tracking forestry operations, and monitoring conservation efforts. In his remarks, Mr. Rajiv Kumar, Former Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, Head of Forest Force highlighted its importance in integrating on-ground operations into decision-making. Overall, the eFOREST Portal will significantly enhance sustainable forest management and biodiversity conservation in Himachal Pradesh.
